Marui MP5 review
In two years I have owned 4 Marui MP5's the MP5SD6, the MP5A4, MP5A5 and the MP5K, I now now sucessfully sold off ALL of them and consider myself free from the curse that is, the Marui MP5 range.

Third, the gearbox is nice and simply constructed, the MP5 uses the Version2 gearbox(except the K) and the gearbox is nice and easy to upgrade and repair.

Fourth, they perform well, they tend to have good overall power and range, and with the easy to reach hop-up unit lever they are fast to tune on the battlefield(except the K)

Good Side to the TM MP5's
Right, we shall start with the good points of the TM MP5 ok? First they are nice and light, this means you can run around all day with them at a skirmish and you will not have aching arms, if you want a gun you can hold in one hand and fire about around corners easily then these are perfect.

Second, they don't look too bad from a distance, I.E. over 3 metres, when you are running around in a game and you see a TM MP5 you can't help but think "cool".

Evil Side to the TM MP5's
First, the outer build quality, its really really bad. the Upper reciver is a cheapy thin plastic, and the receiver is in two parts split down the centre line of the gun lengthways, and the gun tends to split in the middle after a short operating life, mainly in the mag well, causing misfeeds and indeed no feed at all from the magazine, this major problem cannot be glued melted or clamped properly with an MP5(I tried "chemical metal" at one point to try and fix the problem, it lasted 1 skirmish game before the metal glue split again...

Second, where the reciever meets the forgrip is a very weak point of the gun, I have personnally seen two different MP5A4's break completly in half from minor bumps on the skirmish field, even if you are carefull I have examined older MP5's and found "Stress fractures" along this part of the gun, this area can be re-enforced internally by an airsoft gunsmith, but is no guarentee that you won't suffer damage anyway.

MP5K's extra evils...
The MP5k makes a couple of even more evil deeds, first, the Gearbox is a V2.5, which is a flattened down version of the V2 standard gearbox, this gearbox is MUCH harder to repair and upgrade, it is held together at the top by a metal "strip-clamp" that is almost impossible to remove to get in and even more difficult to replace after the gearbox has been worked on. why oh why didn't Marui rework the MP5K with a V3 or V5 gearbox!?!?

Second, the hop-up unit and Battery are much harder to get to in the field, the Hop is forgivable, but the Battery requires you to carefully remove 3 different pins on the gun, take off the buttplate AND the foregrip then spend ages fiddling around with an arkward battery...

Third, the look, as I say from a short distance the MP5 does look good, but once you get up close to this gun it loses most of its glamour, up close it looks tacky and plastic, you can see through the foregrip on the MP5A4 and see the brass barrel quite clearly.. on the A5 model and the K you can see the battery from certain angles of view through the foregrip gaps, only the SD models hide the forgrip parts well, and even that looks "cheap plastic" right up close.

So to summerize with marks out of ten for the 4 Marui MP5's

MP5A4 = 5 out of 10, large battery but suffers above problems, average at best..

MP5A5 = 4 out of 10, small battery, weakly built stock, viewable battery from rear..

MP5SD6 = 4 out of 10, small battery, silencer can brake quite easily, but looks the part better..

MP5K = 3 out of 10, small and badly designed battery, stay away from the gearbox..
